How the fertile window is calculated

The calendar method estimates ovulation around 14 days before the end of the cycle (not 14 days after the start, which only aligns in exact 28-day cycles). The fertile window includes the 5 days before ovulation, ovulation day itself, and the day after, because sperm can survive for several days inside the body waiting for the egg to be released, which itself has a brief window for fertilization after ovulation.

Why cycle length matters

In a 28-day cycle, ovulation occurs around day 14. In a 30-day cycle, it shifts to day 16 because the calculation is always "14 days before the end of the cycle," not a fixed date from the beginning. Therefore, entering your true average cycle length (rather than assuming 28 days) significantly changes the estimate.

Limitations of the method

Calendar calculation assumes that your cycle repeats with a constant length, which is rarely perfect even for those with "regular" cycles. Stress, illness, schedule changes, and other factors can shift ovulation earlier or later in any given month without reflecting in the calculation. As a result, this method should not be the sole basis for contraception decisions or pregnancy planning.
